Price trends in primary commodity markets are of considerable importance for the world economy. Raw materials prices constitute an important cost factor for consumer countries and can exert a noticeable influence on price trends in the short term. In developing and newly industrialising economies which produce and export raw materials, commodity prices are an important determining factor in export returns; as such they exert a major influence on the economic development of these countries and on their import capacity.

The HWWI Index of World Market Prices of Commodities, a product of the HWWI Consult GmbH, provides an all-encompassing gauge of current price trends in commodity markets, and has been included in statistical databases of national and international institutions. It is updated regularly with daily figures being calculated once every week and is available on a paid subscription basis.
